VeriSign Reports Spending Rose 88 Percent During 2004 Holiday Season |

VeriSign announced in its 5th annual Internet Security Intelligence Briefing (ISIB) that holiday shoppers were undaunted by the threat of phishing attacks and identity fraud with just 6% of online purchases being deemed as “too risky”. VeriSign processed approximately $12 billion in online sales during last year’s holiday season as compared to $6.4 billion for 2003 or in other words online holiday spending rose 88 percent.
The briefing concludes that there are many factors contributing to the continued strong growth in e-commerce and the dramatic increases during the holiday season. These include increased customer confidence in shopping online, growing broadband/high speed Internet access penetration across the United States, availability of more inexpensive goods on the Internet, and an increasing number of rural consumers shopping online for goods they cannot buy locally.
