SimpleNet Data Center Withstands 5.3 Magnitude Earthquake

SAN DIEGO – June 16, 2004 – SimpleNet, a premier provider of Web hosting, domain management, email, and data center services today easily withstood a 5.3 magnitude earthquake. The quake shook the San Diego region for a few seconds at around 3:30 p.m. on June 15.

The United State Geological Society reported that the moderate quake registered 5.3 on the Richter scale. It was centered 49 miles west-southwest of San Diego and around 52 miles from the coast of Rosarito Beach in Mexico. Although the epicenter of the quake was beneath the ocean floor, experts said there was no threat of a tsunami hitting the coastline of California.

“This is a testament to the solid, secure data center that we’ve built here in San Diego,” said President John Killian. “We’ve made sure that our equipment is able to withstand these possibilities, which equates to our customers experiencing zero downtime.”

On another note, SimpleNet also experienced a huge jump in bandwidth, as some of its news-related co-location customers felt the load of those looking for more information about the earthquake. “These types of events, such as earthquakes and the fires that we had in San Diego last fall, are proof that we’ve created a robust and scaleable presence for our customers. Our architecture is easily able to handle bandwidth spikes in great multiples,” said Killian.
