Month in Review August 2005
The web hosting news month of August started off with LiveCast UK Ltd offering a unique new hosting plan that allows customers to make royalty payments automatically and therefore anyone can start up their own Internet radio station. Other interesting new web hosting offers this month include ZEZAN Globals video encoding and streaming solutions, HostMySites new Google Sitemap Tool, Hosting.coms offering of ASP.NET 2 web hosting, and NPSIS doubling of storage and bandwidth quotas on all of their hosting plans.
The month of August was a fractious month with the largest of the large engaged in lawsuits, chest-thumping denunciations and challenges. To top off the conflicted fun search engine giant Google is facing a class-action lawsuit for overcharging for its advertising. Meanwhile, Microsoft was on the other end of a law-suit, slapping spam king Scott Richter with a hefty $7 million suit. Whether you believe George Bush to be a champion of iron-clad morals or simply an empty-headed moron, there is no denying his appeal to the radical far right-wing Christian minority whose cause he has again championed in managing to put the new .xxx domain on hold because it legitimizes pornography. Domain registrar and web host Go Daddy CEO Bob Parsons issued an accusatorial public challenge to rival Network Solutions to back up their words on their number of domains hosted and number of customers in his blog this month while ISP Covad issued a press release to assert that it will still be able to provide service despite the Supreme Court ruling that cable providers do not have to open their networks as a public utility.
While the month of August was filled with conflict it also featured a couple of peaceful partnerships with web hosting provider HostMySite forging an agreement with Auersoft to create customized document management and managed hosting solutions. Go Daddys Bob Parsons showed his constructive side in leading his firm to partner with DomainsBot on a name suggestion service. Also, web host PowWeb acquired the website FAQTs.com.
Speaking of Go Daddy who advertised in the Super Bowl last year to much acclaim, another web host has decided to follow in their footsteps and advertise during Dallas Cowboys games this coming NFL season. To round out the month, services provider BlueTie was awarded a patent for secure a new file transfer technology.
