January in Review |
 |
The holiday season over, January, like in most other industries was a time to look forward and plan the year ahead. Except in Ireland it would seem, where Novara's survey of Irish companies suggested many weren't properly prepared for 2006 . That aside, what does 2006 hold in store? Well, one web hosting company's survey predicts a great year ahead let's hope so! That could mean a particularly good year for The Planet' who announced record results in 2005 !
January saw the Web Hosting Show' turn one year old (can you believe it?) and it was also a month that saw Yahoo! go beyond the browser and plans for Google AdWords to appear on the radio (???). A number of companies went ahead and opened new datacenters, including Hostway and Steadfast Networks , while AIT opened a new Atlanta Branch office . Never far from the news, Go Daddy's Superbowl advert is already causing controversy and news that it is not-yet-confirmed' means everybody is talking about Go Daddy, and they don't really need the commercial anymore anyway! On a more serious note, in January the Center for Democracy and Technology complained to the Federal Trade Commission in the US about a web hosting provider it claimed "dupes" people into receiving Adware .
Of course, as with any other month, January saw web hosts and related businesses receive awards. HostMySite.com got Microsoft Gold while Network Solutions was recognized for its customer service and CrownPeak became a Codie' finalist . SmallBusinessComputing.com's Products of the Year' featured web hosting providers GoDaddy, Register.com Yahoo! and Interland .
In the world of domain names Dotster became the lowest cost provider' of thawte digital certificates , GoDaddy.com partnered to offer Premium Domain Names' and RegisterFly.com, Inc. offered free blogging with new domain names. As ever, January saw a whole bunch of new hosting packages hit the streets. HostingDelivery launched a new business hosting plan , Micfo.com LLC unveiled new Premium' hosting packages, Host Color introduced multi-domain hosting, JNS Internet bundled web site tools and hosting, uplinkearth offered dedicated server and Hostirian launched low-cost Dedicated Dell PowerEdge Server Packages. Promotions announced in January included NetHost247's $1.99 promotion and Above1's special offers for new customers.
Of course, as with every other month, business is business, and it's nothing personal! Wave2Wave acquired IntelliSpace, Sitestar purchased Netrover, Inc. and its web hosting customers, while Incognito Networks acquired SCPanel.NET. Meanwhile, Affinity Internet announced a new web hosting brand' and Covad signed a deal with CompUSA. January activity in the reselling world included VistaPages offering new reseller plans and Directi Group's ResellerClub announcing a new beta' program for its members. New services offered in January included Apollo Hosting's email filtering and BroadSpire 's small business web stores.
There were plenty of partnerships in January - GoDaddy partnered with SWSoft to facilitate new Windows virtual dedicated servers, Star Hosting announced a new support relationship with ETechSupport.net, and DemoWolf continued to persue an agressive partnership regime. In addition companies showed off their new hardware and software in January. SCPanel.net offered web hosting providers a range of new features, Dream Hosting launched a new web hosting, domain and billing management panel, Biztology launched the CUBE PANEL and NCS Technologies launched a fanless and diskless appliance platform suitable for web hosting. As ever, January saw web hosts boost their offerings, Apollo Hosting provided upgrades to shared and VPS hosting plans, Hostonfire.com announced plans and support upgrade, RoundBerry doubled storage and bandwidth, Micfo.com introduced unlimited domains and increased disk space and bandwidth, while C I Host expanded bandwidth . In addition a number of companies fought the good fight. The war on SPAM / Viruses continued with Comodo Inc. helping stem fraud attacks against charities and US LEC offering virus and spam threats defense.
All in all, a wicked start to the year and hopefully that will carry on through the rest of 2006! |
