C I Host Goes Extra Mile, Builds Private, Dual-Path Transit Network |
 |
New Optical Wavelength 'Dark Fiber' Web Hosting Network Reduces Downtime Danger
FORT WORTH (July 1, 2004) - A new strand of dark fiber optic cable now runs under the ground the last mile between the spot where global bandwidth carriers dump into the local network of the Dallas-Fort Worth area and C I Host's primary data center in Bedford.
That mile of C I Host cable, unlike the local phone company's cable it replaces, has a dual path for data transmission. The dual path provides redundancy - if part of it goes down, another part keeps transmitting data - and eliminates the single point of failure that can spell downtime and lost revenues for businesses that rely on eCommerce for their success.
"Most Web hosting companies have to rely on their local CLEC (Competitive Local Exchange Carrier) to provide that last mile of local loop connectivity for bandwidth to get to their data centers," said Christopher Faulkner, CEO of C I Host. "A non-redundant POP at that juncture can become a single point of failure and take down 500 bandwidth providers at once. We have eliminated the potential for that problem for our customers."
A single strand of fiber can transmit more than two terabits of information per second. The new C I Host cable includes two strands of fiber and can transmit over four terabits of data per second, "making it the largest privately held Web hosting network in the world capable of meeting any customer demand at the blink of an eye," Faulkner said.
C I Host also expanded its network this month to 5,000 Mbits, or 5 Gbits, and now obtains bandwidth from Level 3 Communications, Cogent Systems, Teleglobe, Broadwing Communications and Aleron.
"Having this amount of bandwidth and our own cable right into our data center means that we can take on enterprise level customers at the push of a button," Faulkner said. "For example, if a large company comes to us and needs 500Mbits of traffic right now, and is willing to sign up tomorrow if we can deliver that, we can do that instantly!"
A Web hosting company that didn't have those resources would have to call a bandwidth provider to order a new circuit and call the local CLEC to order the local loop to take the extra bandwidth that final mile. That could take from two to six months, Faulkner said.
"Our competitive advantage has far surpassed the industry standard," Faulkner said. "We are ready for any client that comes in our door and we can turn up any amount of bandwidth that our customer needs with little or no notice."
C I Host, which owns its own facilities, has no long-term debt and has consistently expanded throughout even during the recent troubled economy, spent $250,000 for the new fiber stands, the trenching and routing and the switching gear at both ends of the network.
The new network segment creates a highly secure connection because the fiber cable doesn't pass through a carrier's central office. C I Host's data integrity not jeopardized and C I Host is able to control everything dealing with its customer's experience on the bandwidth and service delivery platforms.
"We spare no expense to deliver zero downtime service to our customers," Faulkner said. "In the service business, all you have to go on is your reputation and the quality of service you deliver. We plan to exceed everyone's expectations in both categories."
