C I Host Successfully Blocks Sasser Worm |

Quick Action By C I Host Eliminates Latest Internet Threat
FORT WORTH, TX (May 14, 2004) - Continuing its track record of going the extra mile to protect its customers against attacks from computer worms and viruses, C I Host has successfully prevented the most recent piece of malicious code, Sasser, from harming any of its more than 210,000 customers across the globe.
"We patched and blocked it at our firewalls and stopped it in its tracks," said Christopher Faulkner, CEO of C I Host. "We are serious about security and have spent millions of dollars so we can assure our customers that our network and their data are safe."
C I Host, a global leader in Web hosting and Internet solutions, can protect its customers from computer virus and worm attacks through a system of protections that includes 17 hardware firewalls at the edge of its core networks, host-based firewalls within each of its servers and similar protections in each of its core software packages.
In addition, teams of C I Host cybersecurity experts work around the clock to monitor new threats and patch all servers before the "Huns are at the gates."
For example, C I Host patched all its servers before the attack in August 2003 of the MSBlast (Lovsan) worm, and was one of the few Web hosts to completely patch its servers against Code Red in 2001, sparing its customers most of the headaches of that worm.
And, within 24 hours of the MyDoom viral outbreak in January, C I Host developed, tested and installed a virus filter called "Doompster" to totally extract and trash the MyDoom worm from the e-mails of its clients.
"This is what we do best, and we know all the tricks to thwart the hackers," Faulkner said. "Our customers come first - and that includes throwing all the resources necessary at a threat to prevent it from harming their data."
Faulkner said C I Host's commitment to being aggressively pro-active in defending its system against malicious code is part of its commitment to keep the Internet safe and healthy.
"This infection, it seems, started in Europe and spread around the globe in minutes as weakly-protected computers sent it to other vulnerable computers," Faulkner said.
"We all have to work together against such attacks. It is the responsibility of everyone who uses this amazing commercial, academic and social tool to 'sweep the stoop in front of their own house' diligently and keep their part of our interconnected world robust, clean and safe."
Since the Sasser worm was discovered on April 30, it and its variants - many thought to be the work of relatively inexperienced copycats - have infected nearly a million computers world-wide, tangling university networks, delaying air travel and costing businesses millions of dollars.
Systems infected with the Sasser worm randomly scan local networks and the Internet for Windows PCs that have not been updated with the latest Microsoft patch. The worm functions in a very similar way to the MSBlast worm, which caused millions of dollars in damage and disruption last summer. Sasser doesn't destroy data, but causes computers to reboot when the user tries to connect to the Internet.
