CAN-SPAM Expert: C I Host's Faulkner Gives Tips to Impede Spam; Satirizes 'Spam I Am' |
 |
DALLAS, Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- "I'm afraid the CAN-SPAM Act reads about as comprehensive as a Dr. Seuss novel in its elementary approach to spam," quipped Christopher Faulkner, CEO of C I Host. "Maybe we should call it the 'CAN-SPAM I Am' Act."
Faulkner joined critics who suggest the law may enable spammers because of its lists of "do's and "don'ts." For instance, allowing unsolicited e-mail provided the message includes an "opt-out."
"There is nothing like a loophole to spur unsavory business," Faulkner said. "The battle against spam will be won with technology, not legislation."
Faulkner said spammers will continue to modify messages to avoid filters and to meet legal criteria. He pointed out that an estimated 75 percent of spam originates in Asia, beyond U.S. jurisdiction. Conservative estimates rate that 60 percent of all e-mail is spam.
To avoid spam, Faulkner offers these tips: -- Don't buy anything from companies who market via spam! -- Be extremely selective before sharing an e-mail address with anyone or any company. -- Set up dedicated mail boxes for the e-mails you do wish to see. -- De-select the automatic, opt-in or default boxes that permit Web sites to send additional information or share e-mail addresses with other marketers. -- Create a separate e-mail to use when shopping on-line, or use "disposable" e-mail addresses. -- Do not include your primary e-mail address on your Websites, making it available for spambots and other harvesting techniques. -- Treat spam as a potential computer virus: delete it without opening it. -- Don't open anything from someone you don't know. -- Try a filter from a reputable software vendor, although they offer limited results. -- Consider operating systems and e-mail programs that are less prevalent and therefore less susceptible to spam. -- Be happy with your current size!
