Portland, OR - January 2, 2002
Today in an effort to help aid Portland Public Schools sixth grade students, BlueShore Hosting will be donating 10% of all proceeds to the MESD Outdoor School program (http://w3.mesd.k12.or.us/os/).
Brief History: MESD Outdoor School has been serving the Portland Metropolitan area for 36 years. With cuts brought to the Portland Public School district 3 months into the 2002-2003 school year forced the school district to cut the Outdoor School program mid year. Portland Public Schools sends approximately 4000 sixth grade students to Outdoor School each year. In order to send Portland Public School's sixth graders to Outdoor School this year, 487,000 dollars must be raised by February 15th.
Excerpts from the Save Outdoor School Brochure: Outdoor School is a program from the Multnomah Educational Service district that provides school districts in Multnomah county with a week of environmental education out in the environment they are learning about.
Outdoor School is a week of Natural Science education in the environment they are learning about. Not just seeing a fish tank in their class-room but exploring a river in the forest. The program lasts a week and teaches about 580 students at four different sites. Outdoor School is more than just a "camp" it is a classroom in the woods. Outdoor School teaches about water, plants, animals, and soil. Unlike many other programs, Outdoor School is all inclusive. This means that every student from the high achievers to the students with special needs (such as wheelchairs) can come and learn at Outdoor School.
Every 6th grader that attends Outdoor School spends the week in a small cabin group led by a high school volunteer. These high school volunteers or student leaders lead the cabin groups and help mold the week for success. The student leaders also add a valuable component to the Outdoor School experience; They are the ones teaching the 6th grade students about natural sciences. The student leaders take a week from school to come and teach younger students and learn valuable child management skills that will help them for years to come.
